Mr. Spiros Pengas

Deputy Mayor for Tourism Development and International Relations
City of Thessaloniki, Greece

A visionary, highly qualified, experienced and strongly dedicated to the common
good prolific politician. Spiros Pengas, born and raised in Thessaloniki, is the
incumbent Deputy Mayor for Tourism Development and International Relations of
the City of Thessaloniki since 2014. He commenced his political career as a Member
of the Local Council after the municipal elections of 2010. In 2011 he was appointed
by the Mayor as a Deputy Mayor for Culture, Education & Tourism. In 2013 he
continued his career as an Appointed Counsellor for Tourism and International
Relations and President and CEO of the Metropolitan Development Agency of
Thessaloniki, while in 2014 he was promoted to the Deputy Mayor for Tourism and
International Relations.
He is a graduate of the German School of Thessaloniki and a holder of degrees in
Political Science and International Relations from the Universities of Freiburg and
Munich. The acquired experience during his term in the office of the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Brussels, along with his experience as
the owner and General Director of his family business “Galerie Dora
Penga”(transforming it from a local business to a nationally recognized enterprise),
constituted the basis and the pillar of his aforementioned political career.
Spiros’ work has received wide acknowledgment at both national and international
levels. He chalked up many achievements pertaining to the extroversion, the tourism
development and the international relations of Thessaloniki with other cities, via the
City’s participation in Platforms and Forums of global interest. Namely, some of the
hosted international events during his stint period are: the “15th Mediterranean
Biennale of Young Artists” and the “Womex- World Music Expo”, whereas
innovative initiatives like: “Thessaloniki Food Festival”, “Thessaloniki Mystery
City”, “Study in Thessaloniki”, the institution of children’s sleepover events in
museum and the renovation of four Children’s Libraries (in collaboration with the
Stavros Niarchos Foundation) have been awarded by the Greek Hospitality Awards
2016.
Spiros is specifically concerned with the attraction of direct investments in the
Tourism Industry and new services that will boost Thessaloniki’s inbound tourism,
prosperity and common wealth.
